My dad lived in Ocean Falls for a short time when he was young, and my grandfather worked in the paper mill. My aunt was a phone switchboard operator for the town. My dad said they had to fly in by PBY an old WW2 era sea plane. After the family moved way, there was a large land slide that killed some of the residents. Eventually the paper mill closed. I believe the name of the company that owned the papermill was Crown Zellerbach.

I don’ t have a philosophy about eating crab. I cannot remember ever eating crab, fresh. I have had a tiny tin of crab paste, but that is as close as I could get here in Melbourne.

The grounded boat is a lesson to us all in what a huge difference it can make to address such a situation methodically if it should come up. That's a beautiful steep pebble beach to ground on. People would choose this spot DELIBERATELY if they were careening the boat to clear a fouled propeller or something of the sort. The difference is that they would do two things: 1) Shift cargo to ensure that the boat heels TOWARD the beach rather than away from it as the tide falls. However, check for trees or other obstructions that might foul the mast. The heel away from the water allows the boat to remain much more upright, so that there is less risk of the boat flooding as the tide rises. It also reduces the risk of seas washing aboard. Nevertheless, it can be a nervous couple of hours, watching while the tide rises closer and closer to the rail. It's far worse with the boat heeled the other way. 2) Set out anchors well abeam at bow and stern to prevent the boat from washing up the beach as the tide floats it off. These also serve to hold the boat parallel to the shoreline as it settles over, so you have to ease them periodically as the tide falls, and harden them as the tide rises. If you have only one suitable anchor, lead it from midships. Do not neglect this, or you may end up permanently beached.

If you can arrange to have a speaker or similar in the bilge, dolphins are very receptive to music. When I had my trailer-sailer, I was able to lay some Strauss from a ghetto-blaster down in the bilge. The dolphins came close to us and kept pace with us for a while. Dolphins, though, have a short attention span and they soon swam off.

Flashing on the laundry at Shearwater gave me tumultuous shakes of nostalgia! And the showers: 0ne lunni gets you two minutes of hot water, but remember your sandals! There were a few visiting dignitaries there on my last visit. My partner said that they must look at us in our 35 year old boat as pond scum. And another sailor reminded us that pond scum always rises to the surface. We all had a good laugh a few adult beverages and a fond farewell the following morning. Your videography, editing and story telling is really good. I'm thoroughly enjoying your experience.

I bought a boat with a friend years ago that was an absolute kludge. We knew it when we bought it and thought that it would be a fun, "project." The project became an endless set or ongoing projects that never ended even though the two of us refused to be beaten. We called the boat the, "Economic Stimulator." It was a marriage of frustration, financial destitute and some of the best stories of my life. We gave it to a friend after several years and I bought a new-to-me boat that took me from San Francisco to Alaska. I have really enjoyed your journeys. Thank you for posting.

I just want to say as a NZ commercial skipper and a subscriber to many sailing channels, your channel is the most authentic and real as it happens channel out there. No string bikinis, no tits and arse hanging out, no freaking out when the waves are only 6 feet high but just real and raw sailing on one of the most treacherous seas on Earth. You and your vessel are a credit to you all. Well done. No higher praise can be given to you. Thank you for sharing with the World. Perhaps it will make some fair-weather sailors wake up and take notice. I was in a hurricane in 1974 sailing from NZ to Vanuatu called New Hebrides at the time so I know what its like to be in heavy seas but thank god you weren't. Your vessel just loved the conditions.

Sorry to hear about the raw fish event glad you were able to recover without needing to hit Bella Bella. Also thanks for picking up the beach trash I do it hiking and find crap everywhere from everywhere angers me. cant wait to see the boat projects and follow along to Alaskan waters.

Crossing the ocean, is it a " bleu boat" ? And how many years experience?

I have a comment about mounting those Victron charge controllers. They have a blue LED that flashes at night when the batteries are not charging. It is very bright and quite annoying. The LED is bright enough that even reflected light from it was very noticeable. Because of that issue I had to relocate my charge controllers to a location where they could not be seen from the main cabin>strongly suggest you have some sort of light block around the solar controllers. I can't comment about the DC:DC converter because mine is mounted in a cabinet.

What a wonderful study vessel. She definitely rode pretty well through the storms. Beautiful narration through the passage. Lovely family and very lucky to have had this life experience.

There comes a time after purchasing and fixing up a new place, that you realise, that when you make the right decisions, a house (albeit a floating one) suddenly feels and becomes a home........... from what we have had the joy to witness, at seeing your obvious pride in what you have both achieved, this looks like you have found a home to me !!!!!

When you mention "North of the 50th" I cannot suppress a grin, living at Amsterdam latitude near the North Sea, roughly at 52.4N, in the London, Amsterdam, Berlin latitude ballpark. For comparison: Vancouver, BC, CDN is at 49.3N. In Europe: Copenhagen & Edinburgh (~56N), Northernmost mainland Scotland (Thurso) & Stockholm (~59N), Bergen & Oslo & Helsinki & St.. Petersburg (~60N), Reykjavik (~64N), Arctic Circle (66.5N), Mehamn, Norway(~71N), Longyearbyen, (mid) Svalbard (~78N). At ~46.8N, Quebec City is farther South than Paris France (~48.9N). If we compare these to the Southern Hemisphere, note that Antarctica stretches outside the Antarctic circle (~66.6S). Nearest city in Australia to that circle would be Melbourne (~37.8S) when ~37.3N could see me set foot on the African continent. Hobart, Tasmania (~43S). Bluff, NZ (~46.6S). In South America, Ushuaia (~54.8S). Both Teniente R. Marsh Airport - Antarctica (~62.2S) and Base Marambio - Antarctica (~64.2S) are outside the Antarctic circle, still. 1 degree latitude is about 111 kilometers or 69 miles or almost 60 nautical miles. New upholstery makes such a big difference in the interior environment. You commented that the old cushions had a foul smell. We have found that most of the smell of old cushions is in the foam. Many years ago, I had a forced air diesel heating that suffered a failure in the high-pressure fuel line which sprayed atomized fuel into the blower air and subsequently because a fuel mist that covered everything inside the boat. I pressure washed the interior of the boat. I then removed all of the cushion covers and washed them at home which helped but the foam still reeked of diesel. We could not afford new foam at the time, so I decided to "deodorize" it. Febreze has enzymes that digest petroleum and organic compounds and removes the smell, but it needs to actually touch the smelly compounds. Knowing this. I sprayed the exterior of each cushion with Febreze and put it into a garbage bag. I then used a vacuum to suck all of the air out of the foam until it was compressed into a brick. Then I pulled the hose out of the bag and sprayed more Febreze into the bag as the foam refilled with air. I then taped the bag closed to seal in the Febreze. Within a day or two, the c had not smell.
